John Battersby joined GPLUS as a senior adviser in May 2018, bringing with him an unrivalled knowledge of South Africa. A former journalist, he was editor of the Sunday Independent in Johannesburg and foreign correspondent in Africa and the Middle East for the New York Times and Christian Science Monitor respectively.
In a personal capacity, John is a director of the South African Chamber of Commerce in the UK and a director of Transact SA, a company running trade missions between the UK and South Africa. From 2004-2015, he was the UK Country Manager of Brand South Africa responsible for positioning the country as a favorable destination for trade, tourism and investment.
He is chair of trustees of the UK-based Canon Collins Educational and Legal Assistance Trust, and a trustee of Life is Wonderful, a charity honoring the lives and values of Mandela’s colleagues from the Rivonia trial. He is also a global peace ambassador for the Tutu Foundation UK.
