Michael is an expert in what can be termed the "EU's domestic policies" - areas where Brussels sets the agenda for business or has direct powers of intervention: competition policy, the internal market, consumer protection, environment policy and transport.
With 25 years of experience in European affairs, Michael provides strategic advice and direction to both companies and industry associations. He also advises clients on communications in difficult circumstances, such as antitrust proceedings or regulatory threats.
Immediately prior to joining g+, Michael was former EU Competition Commissioner Mario Monti's spokesperson and adviser. His three-year stint from 1999 to 2002 as EU competition spokesman spanned a period when mergers, cartels and other anti-trust cases, as well as the control of state subsidies, made headline news on a daily basis.
Before joining Monti's inner team, Michael was spokesman at the EU Council of Ministers. Over a period of five years, he followed negotiations on the internal market and industrial policy, social affairs and the environment. Previously, Michael worked in the Commission's policy units dealing with consumer protection and enterprise policy.
Michael began his career as a journalist with the respected daily news sheet "Agence Europe" and later with the German service of Reuters.
Michael has a degree from the Institut d'Etudes Politiques in Strasbourg and a diploma from the College of Europe in Bruges.
A German national, he is fluent in English and French, and also has a basic knowledge of Dutch and Italian and can understand Spanish and Portuguese.
